When the spectres return

Ethno☰hauntology vol1 is based on the artistic manifesto first published in Fantasma Material magazine in December 2024. The manifesto proposes a methodology that engages specters through the use of cinema and art as a means of rethinking time, space, and social reality. This first edition in Athens functions as a laboratory for applying this method within a living festival.

Film showcase at NEWMAN cinema

From January 22 to 28, 31 films from Latin America will haunt the screen of NEWMAN cinema. Poetic documentaries, genre cinema, experimental films, and hybrid works that balance between different forms bring to the surface the ghosts of colonialism, migration, political upheavals, and popular narratives that continue to shape contemporary Latin American societies. Most films in the program will have their Greek premiere. After each screening, an online discussion will follow with the directors or experts on their work.

Art exhibition at the Kypseli City Market

From January 21 to 27, Ethno☰hauntology vol1 presents – in collaboration with the Kypseli City Market – an expanded art exhibition centered on the hypermedia installation Pabellón de Melancólicos.

The exhibition extends a line that links analogous phenomena and memories between Greece and Latin America. Upon passing through the ethno-hauntological portal configured by the hypermedia work Pabellón de Melancólicos, the viewer enters a universe in which specters resonate, activated by an external force – the artistic act – that vibrates at the natural frequency of their own system. As a work that simultaneously channels other works, it provokes dialogues among entities that dismantle the linearity of space-time, proposing new instruments for measuring “sociohistorical reality.” This interaction unfolds a landscape in which inheritances, mourning processes, futures, and collective imaginaries overlap, allowing us to discover, in others and in their specters, a reflection of our own identities.

Alongside the screenings and the art exhibition, the festival unfolds through talks, workshops, performances, and sound presentations that function as living spaces of encounter and active participation among artists, researchers, and the public.
